What Is Kiln Firing? A Beginner's Guide to How Ceramics Are Made

Every ceramic mug, bowl, and cup begins as soft, wet clay — and ends as a hard, waterproof, food-safe object you can drink your morning coffee from. The transformation that makes this possible is kiln firing: heating clay to extraordinary temperatures until it changes, permanently, into ceramic. It's where the "Kiln" in Kiln & Sip comes from, and it's the single most important step in making pottery. Here's how it works, in plain language.

What is a kiln?

A kiln is a specialised oven built to reach and hold very high temperatures — far hotter than any kitchen oven. Where a home oven tops out around 260 °C (500 °F), a pottery kiln reaches 1,000–1,300 °C (1,830–2,370 °F). That intense, controlled heat is what turns fragile dried clay into durable ceramic. Kilns are typically electric, gas, or wood-fired, and each leaves its own subtle signature on the finished piece.

Why clay needs firing at all

Air-dried clay may look finished, but it's still just compacted dust — it will soften and dissolve the moment it meets water. Firing triggers permanent chemical and physical changes in the clay: moisture is driven out, particles fuse together, and the material becomes hard, strong, and water-resistant. Only after firing is a piece truly ceramic, and only then is it safe to hold hot liquid.

The two firings behind most pottery

Most functional pottery — including the mugs you drink from — is fired not once but twice. Each firing does a different job.

1. The bisque firing

The first firing, called the bisque, is done at a lower temperature (around 1,000 °C / 1,830 °F). It hardens the raw clay into a porous, sturdy state that's easy to handle and — crucially — able to absorb liquid glaze. A bisque-fired piece is strong enough to work with but not yet waterproof.

2. The glaze firing

After the bisque piece is coated in liquid glaze, it goes back into the kiln for a hotter glaze firing. Here the temperature climbs high enough to melt the glaze into a smooth, glassy, waterproof surface that fuses to the clay. Temperature is everything: understanding "firing to a cone"

Potters don't just set a temperature — they fire to a specific point where the right amount of heat and time have been reached. Traditionally this is measured with pyrometric cones, small pyramids that bend at a known heat-and-time combination. The higher the firing:

  • Low-fire (earthenware) stays softer and more porous — bright colours, but less durable.
  • High-fire (stoneware and porcelain) becomes vitrified: the clay partly turns to glass, making it dense, strong, and non-absorbent — ideal for everyday mugs.

Why kiln firing makes every handmade piece unique

Firing isn't perfectly predictable, and that's part of the magic. Inside the kiln, tiny differences in temperature, atmosphere, and a piece's position can shift how a glaze melts and pools. The same glaze can come out slightly different from one firing to the next. It's why genuinely handmade, kiln-fired pottery carries subtle, one-of-a-kind character that mass production can't replicate — every mug is quietly shaped by its own trip through the fire.
